Spring Is Here!

Although the official first day of spring is March 20th, in New England the hints of this reality are closer to May.  As blossoms appear and daylight extends there is no better time for a sense of new beginnings.  This year Passover and Easter share the same weekend and ideally both these celebrations bring families close together. These days inspire reflection on suffering and the enlightenment of rebirth and new beginnings.  Perhaps a reminder that life is full of challenges, and our time here is very short.

There is comfort in traditions amidst an ever-changing world, and it reminds us to focus on what really matters the most.  Even when our families evolve more to friends we can still create the childlike joyfulness of these holidays, and enjoy the comforting familiarity of spring coming into bloom.  I highly recommend a walk through the Public Garden, a ride on the swan boats, and Cadbury chocolate Easter eggs.  Embracing celebrations gives life meaning, laughter, conversation, great food, music, and an interconnectedness that rejuvenates as we transition through all ages.

Boston in springtime is truly magical. The city evolves from the black and white of late winter to a full technicolor experience. Everything awakens to pink, yellow, and purple. The air is filled with fragrant lilies, hyacinths, and magnolias. Street musicians appear and church organs blast. Chocolate bunnies abound – Burdick’s, Godiva, Lindt. Strangers walking in the park smile and speak. Even the ducklings look happy.  It is as though the entire city awakens from hibernation! You do not have to be a child to decorate eggs and hide surprises! I love to prepare an elaborate Easter feast, but this year I am looking forward to a friend’s Seder dinner on Friday evening, the amazing music at Trinity Church on Easter morning, brunch with Beacon Hill friends, and delivering a jelly bean filled Easter basket to my dear aunt on Sunday night.  Even if you have been too busy to make a plan just go on a walk through Boston this weekend, treat yourself to some chocolate, and I promise you will feel spring emerge within you!
