Post Pandemic Thoughts!

The state of Massachusetts is officially reopening and lifting pandemic guidelines!  I realize that for many there is still a sense of constant vigilance even post vaccination, but I am cautiously optimistic that we are beginning to return to pre-pandemic life.  That said it is now time to reschedule those events, memorials and celebrations that have been postponed, plan a trip, a party, get some help in purging through reams of material goods that have cluttered up your home, upgrade your technology skills, streamline all your bill paying and paperwork, or help your kids with a head start on preparation for school transitions and applications.  I am fully vaccinated and ready to “make your life easier” in helping with projects and events that will give you time to relax and enjoy reconnecting with friends and family.

The pandemic forced us all to isolate and perhaps reassess our priorities a bit.  As a widow, orphan and empty nester time alone was both challenging and thought provoking.  I really missed being able to connect with people and to work together. Our health and our time are true treasures. Now that we can safely gather, I am available to help you “make your life easier”.  Please call or email me to set up a consultation.

Spring Is Here!

Although the official first day of spring is March 20th, in New England the hints of this reality are closer to May.  As blossoms appear and daylight extends there is no better time for a sense of new beginnings.  This year Passover and Easter share the same weekend and ideally both these celebrations bring families close together. These days inspire reflection on suffering and the enlightenment of rebirth and new beginnings.  Perhaps a reminder that life is full of challenges, and our time here is very short.

There is comfort in traditions amidst an ever-changing world, and it reminds us to focus on what really matters the most.  Even when our families evolve more to friends we can still create the childlike joyfulness of these holidays, and enjoy the comforting familiarity of spring coming into bloom.  I highly recommend a walk through the Public Garden, a ride on the swan boats, and Cadbury chocolate Easter eggs.  Embracing celebrations gives life meaning, laughter, conversation, great food, music, and an interconnectedness that rejuvenates as we transition through all ages.

Boston in springtime is truly magical. The city evolves from the black and white of late winter to a full technicolor experience. Everything awakens to pink, yellow, and purple. The air is filled with fragrant lilies, hyacinths, and magnolias. Street musicians appear and church organs blast. Chocolate bunnies abound – Burdick’s, Godiva, Lindt. Strangers walking in the park smile and speak. Even the ducklings look happy.  It is as though the entire city awakens from hibernation! You do not have to be a child to decorate eggs and hide surprises! I love to prepare an elaborate Easter feast, but this year I am looking forward to a friend’s Seder dinner on Friday evening, the amazing music at Trinity Church on Easter morning, brunch with Beacon Hill friends, and delivering a jelly bean filled Easter basket to my dear aunt on Sunday night.  Even if you have been too busy to make a plan just go on a walk through Boston this weekend, treat yourself to some chocolate, and I promise you will feel spring emerge within you!

Best ideas for Valentines Day...

Ever since I was a child I have loved Valentine’s Day. My mother created a magical world of red and pink, flowers, chocolate, ribbons, lace and art supplies to help us make beautiful Valentines for friends and family. She defined the day as one to celebrate love - not limited to romance, but an opportunity to make everyone feel special. The cold, dark days of February can be illuminated on the 14th with candles, champagne, red and pink heart shaped cookies, chocolate dipped strawberries, and fruit and cheese fondue.

Of course, a more formal menu of salmon or filet mignon, asparagus, roast potatoes and lavender crème brulee or chocolate soufflé would also work for a cozy evening at home.  I usually avoid the ubiquitous red roses and prefer to fill my house with pink and red tulips and fragrant hyacinths, a perfect complement to the aroma of freshly baked cookies, red velvet cupcakes and melted chocolate for dipping fruit. In addition to strawberries I always dip some dried apricots and candied ginger in dark chocolate.  I love to assemble an assortment of these Valentine treats and a simple construction paper decorated heart as a card and deliver them to friends, especially those who may be alone.  I promise – the love you give comes back to you! So invite your friends to gather for a festive meal, play Ella Fitzgerald sings Cole Porter, light the candles and enjoy.  If dinner at home is not your style – Oleana’s in Cambridge; Lucia’s in Boston’s North End; Palma or Majorelle in NYC; Renato’s in Palm Beach or Lasserre in Paris are perfect options for a delicious evening, but I would prefer to have Valentine evening at home!
